Hospital Funding
The provision of medical services in the area is very poor. HELP has been actively providing medical and other equipment to the local hospital in Thirrukovil, which services a large population of Ampara District. The hospital lacks any diagnostics and has very little in the way of medical equipment. We provided the hospital with its first ECG machine in addition to a number of other items that were specifically requested by the medical staff.
The only equipment in the hospital's ICU is an oxygen cylinder and a few basic drugs. We are delighted to have been able to deliver a Graseby 3400 Infusion Pump that was donated to us by Astra Zeneca. Dr Thiagarasah trained 4 nurses to operate it and we understand that a very sick 2 month old child has already benefited from its use. More generally, we have provided a much needed fax machine and a bed for the nurses on call overnight.
Our Trustees discussed the immediate needs of the hospital with one of the two resident doctors at the hospital during a visit in February 2007. A 'shopping list' of requirements was drawn up (see below), which HELP aims to raise funds to fulfil. The total cost is in the region of £5,000: Hospital Shopping List
